Spinystag
While technically including both hinds and stags, the name Spinystag is the one that has seemed to stick. These delicate fairy deer are so small they can stand upon the palm of a human hand, though one would be incredibly blessed to have them do so. The Spinystag relies on its speed to evade predators within the Wood.
They emerge when the first crisp mornings usher the signs of Autumn beginning, and can be occasionally found gathering at quiet ponds in the dappled shade. When Autumn is in full force, their mating season begins. While all Spinystags carry upon their backs a shell which bears a startling resemblance to the shell of a horse chestnut, the males have particularly impressive ones. Just as various deer have a rutting season, so do the Spinystags. The males enact elaborate displays of courtship dances to attract the females. Where two males meet they will often duel, their shells clashing together as they dance.
Spinystags have soft plush fabric bodies, with a wire armature in their necks and legs, which can be lightly posed if somewhat delicate. Their faces, legs, and conker shells are hand sculpted in polymer clay.
